CASTLE
The Grad Castle proudly stands on the remains of an inactive volcano on the hill above the Grad village. According to legend, the Knights Templar began its construction. Over the course of eight centuries, a large pentagonal castle structure was build, which is today considered the largest castle and feudal complex in Slovenia. Following attacks by the Turks, kuruc and rebellious farmers, the castle got its baroque image with multi-level arcade corridors, a castle chapel, and a bell tower. Elements of different architectural styles from Gothic, Romanesque to Baroque are skillfully included in the castle complex and reflect the wealth of its owners. Surrounded by the canopies of centuries-old trees, the castle defies the time for over 800 years. From 2004 onward, the castle has been managed by the Goričko Nature Park Public Institute as a Trilateral park Goričko-Raab-Őrség Centre. The renovated premises nowadays houses the exhibition on the natural richness and cultural landscape of the Goričko Nature park along with an interesting presentation of the historical and ethnological heritage of Goričko.
