NATURE
The high level of biodiversity in Goričko is a result of the numerous diverse habitats within its mosaic-like cultural landscape. Over the centuries, this land has been carefully utilized, shaped, and maintained by humans. Its border location and distance from larger centers have contributed to a significant level of isolation, protecting it from intensive developments and slowing the growth of intensive agriculture in the last century. In flat agricultural areas, the cultural landscape eventually became monotonous, leading to the disappearance of various plant and animal species. However, in the Goričko region, the mosaic cultural landscape, along with its abundance and diversity of living species, has been largely preserved to this day.
This richness and the preservation of the cultural landscape were the primary reasons for granting the area the status of Goričko Nature Park (KP Goričko) in 2003. The Goričko Nature Park is also part of Natura 2000, a network of core breeding and resting sites for rare and threatened species, as well as certain rare natural habitat types that are protected in their own right.
